I believe that my job when designing a cover is to show the reader at a glance what they are going to get when they read the book. For this I feel that there is no better person to turn to than the author. I therefore like to have authors be very involved in the process of designing the cover.
The basic process I go through for book cover design is to ask if you(the author) have any concepts already which I should keep in mind and a few other basic questions. I then like to get a chance to read the book so that I can get a feel for it and appropriately portray it. From this I come up with 3-5 mockups(the graphic design alternative to stick figures) and present them to you. We discuss them and either choose one to work from or scrap them all and I come up with more. I take into account any changes we discussed with the mockup, look for more images, and start the process of making drafts. At each draft I will email you and show you where I am and ask for any responces positive or negative to the design. This goes back and forth a few times until we both feel good about the front cover. I then design and add on the spine and back cover and do one final check to make sure it is perfect. I want you to smile everytime you see the book, so I will never stop until you are happy with how it looks. My mother is a writer so I know how much a book can mean to the author and I am honored to be part of the process.
